Reading more Poetry

Hello bookish friends,

I have been reading more poetry of late and I wanted to share some with you!

Alice Oswald – Fallin Awake (3 stars)

Sunshine – Melissa Lee-Houghton (4 Stars)

My Family and Other Superheroes – Jonathan Edwards (4 Stars)

Talking Dead – Neil Rollinson (3 stars)

In some ways, I have really enjoyed getting back into poetry as I have never pushed myself to read any more than the required reading I had to read for class. However, after reading milk and honey by Rupi Kaur I found myself wanting to pick up more anthologies. I wandered into my local library a few days later and picked up the poetry anthologies that seemed interesting to me, this way I could always pick up my own copy of them if I liked what I read.

I read Falling Awake very quickly and I liked the themes of the book. However, It did not have the same impact that milk and honey had on me. I still gave it 3 stars as I did enjoy the poetry. I did enjoy the poem’s on Greek mythology nearer the end of the book though.

Talking Dead was a little on the odd side for me and I didn’t connect to the poetry as much as I thought I would. I still gave it 3 stars as the content was great. I just didn’t feel very passionate about it. It’s not a book that I want to purchase for myself. The idea of being and the natural act was cleverly written about within this book. It just wasn’t for me.

Sunshine was more my type of poetry as it explores the dark side to living, including mental health, psych wards, loneliness, abuse, addiction and many more. It is a book I may consider picking up again in the future for my own collection but I still did not feel the need to tab the poems I liked or that resonated with me like milk and honey. I gave this book 4 stars.

My Family and Other Superheros was a really refreshing collection of poetry as I had been reading some darker anthologies recently. I loved that this was a Welsh anthology too as part of my family comes from Wales. It was such a joyous collection and It made me smile in many places. I will certainly try and pick up more anthologies like this in the future.

As always, happy reading xxx
